8.2.2.Identifying poor water
Poor water quality can usually be identified by it being murky, smelly, having signs of mineral deposits at the edges and it containing excessive algal growth. There will also be a distinct lack of native aquatic flora and fauna.
Native aquatic vegetation is noticeably absent from many inland rivers, creeks and streams, and this is a contributing factor in the increased sediment and nutrient loads. Dams too often appear very barren and lifeless, and water temperatures are noticeably higher than well-vegetated dams of a similar size.
As for bore water, a sample of surface water can be sent away for testing to identify impurities and dissolved minerals and confirm its general health and suitability for agricultural production.
