Help wanted with rabbit sample collection

Printer-friendly version

Seeking wild rabbit and hare samples: Following the recent outbreak of RHDV2 in rabbits, now also detected in hares (http://www.oie.int/wahis_2/public/wahid.php/Reviewreport/Review?page_refer=MapFullEventReport&reportid=20384), invasive animal researchers are requesting samples from dead wild rabbits and hares.

We are requesting dead wild rabbits and/or hares that may have died from RHDV1 or RHDV2 (not shot/killed by humans, nor with other obvious other outward signs of death, such as road kill). Rabbits and hares that have died from RHDV2 typically look physically intact, lying on the side with legs stretched out and the head tilted back. We can also obtain samples from leg bones.

Rabbits or hares can be dropped off at CSIRO Black Mountain Laboratories (Clunies Ross St, Acton, ACT) or liver/bone samples can be collected in the field – submission form and instructions attached (warning: contains images of dead rabbits). Please contact us at either Robyn.Hall@csiro.au or Roslyn.mourant@csiro.au if you would like some sample collection vials and we can also provide a reply paid postage pack for your convenience.
