Managing stock and keeping them healthy is one of the challenges of owning a farm. If you have one or one hundred animals, or are thinking of buying a few for your small farm, this workshop will give you ideas and practical skills for managing your farm biosecurity to minimise disease. Simple things can make a difference!
The workshop topics will include:
- How to manage biosecurity at your place
- What diseases are a problem in sheep and cattle? What do they look like? When to call the vet?
- Animal health issues coming into the winter season
- Buying and selling stock - what you need to know
- Recognising exotic animal diseases
- A paddock walk and practical session with sheep and cattle.
Our guest speakers are veterinarians Dr Kate Sawford and Dr Natasha Lees who both have extensive farm animal veterinary experience. Property owners and veterinary consultants Peter and Penny Dagg will also tell the story of their farm biosecurity approach.
This cost of this field day is subsidised so the cost to attendees is just $15. Lunch and morning tea will be provided. This event is not suitable for children and please leave your dogs at home.

Guest speakers
Based in Braidwood for the past three years, Kate Sawford is the District Veterinarian for South East Local Land Services. She is a licensed veterinarian with graduate training in epidemiology and public health. She has a special interest in animal disease surveillance, veterinary public health and helping farmers to improve animal health outcomes on their farms. Kate has presented at some of our other workshops and has proved to be a a fountain of knowledge for small farmers.
Natasha Lees has worked in mixed dairy practice since 1996 in Australia and the UK, and worked as a cattle clinician at the University of Sydney and the Royal Veterinary College, London. She was awarded membership of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists in dairy medicine. Natasha lectured at Charles Sturt University from 2006-2014, training veterinary students in all aspects of cattle medicine and production, while undertaking dairy research. Currently, Natasha is a senior associate at Scibus Pty Ltd, a cattle consultancy company based in Camden where she works with farmers and industry to improve farmer knowledge about animal health and financial management through Dairy Australia’s dairy industry extension programs.
Hosts
Our hosts are Peter and Penny Dagg from Eastern Dorpers and White Dorpers. Penny and Peter are committed to breeding quality Dorper sheep with sound confirmation and temperament. They also run a veterinary consultancy business from their farm covering on farm biosecurity, flock herd health, animal husbandry, health and nutrition.
