Jump on the bus with Landcarers from the Yass and Boorowa/Hovells Creek region on a mission to protect our paddock trees!This is a free event open to everyone (however places on the bus are limited) and refreshments will be provided. Paddock trees - Who will miss them when they are gone?
Across our rural landscapes, paddock trees stand out as an iconic image, providing shade and shelter for livestock and maintaining the productive capacity of the land. They also provide food, shelter and nesting sites for a large number of birds, bats, insects and small mammals.
Whilst many landholders appreciate the benefits that paddock trees bring for productivity and biodiversity we are still losing these trees at an alarming rate.
Yass Landcare is involved in new projects with incentives for landholders to protect and replace paddock trees in the landscape through the Yass Habitat Linkages and Saving our Superb Parrot programs.
Our experienced Landcare neighbours at Boorowa/Hovells Creek have developed a project which provides a valuable insight into the value of these “eco giants”, how to protect the old and replant to fill the gaps left by earlier losses so the landscape-wide ecology can restore healthy function. Yass Landcare Group has asked if they could show the background and implementation of this project.
Generously, Boorowa/Hovells Creek Landcare have agreed to host a Field Day to show why they started this project, how it was designed, how it’s being implemented and what they expect it will deliver in the future - for their grandchildren. Keith Hyde, Gordon Refshauge and John Baker will lead their presentation.
Key presenters will explain the finer points of this project:
- Dr Mason Crane (ANU Fenner School) - the compelling ecological role of paddock trees
- Damon Oliver (OEH) - the inspiring project design which has identified where to plant new paddock trees to provide protective sites for feeding, breeding and eco stepping-stones for native wildlife.
The Bus Tour will leave from behind the Yass Memorial Hall at 12.30pm and return by 6.00pm. This event is supported by the Yass Area Network of Landcare Groups, Boorowa Community Landcare, Hovells Creek Landcare, LachLandcare Inc and the ANU Fenner School Sustainable Farms Program with funding through the NSW Environmental Trust Bushconnect program- Yass Habitat Linkages and the NSW Governments Saving our Species - Saving our Superb Parrot Program.
